Cosey and Art…
Posted by Rob
Cosey has always liked to draw. Her first medium was of course the walls. This proved to be a problem as we tend to maintain a standing rule in our home that the walls are to remain the color they are painted. The question remained; Dare we discourage her creative ambitions by painting over them? You bet. Despite any and all emotional scars and future counseling sessions, it was decided that future artwork sessions which involved structural aspects of our home would be met with creative blows to her rear. This of course did not phase her as she had already grown tired of this type of medium and decided to move to the more traditional approach of paper.
I receive her portfolio entries on my desk daily. When I come home from work they are there in a very presentable format, professional in every aspect…. Taped to my desk so well that a tornado could not part them. After I have scraped away the reside of Scotch tape, they end up in a pile on the side of the desk. I have grown so accustomed to seeing them that I really don’t really “look” at them anymore. Well today I took a look at the top four and decided to interpret them for my own understanding…at least I think I am getting it right.
This is entitled “Coach“
Coach is a beautiful representation of a modernized impressionism. Specifically it is a cryptic and realistic view of that guy who teaches her gym class. He is represented here as a mean and evil pirate equipped with swords for hands and a parrot on his shoulder. His gaze is cold..Just like it was when he reportedly told Cosey to stop talking and go back to the end of the line at school last week.
This one is entitled “My Family“
Self explanatory, this piece depicts Cosey’s view of her immediate family as she sees them. Her Mother, Sister and herself are drawn in beautiful flowing dresses. Bathed in the light of a sunny day. With a apparent dislike to her father, she conveys him as a blind, naked man with a bad haircut. She portrays her left eye slightly larger than her right to let him know that she is keeping a eye on him and his foolishness.
“Calligraphy”
Straying from conventional artwork and leaning more toward characterization, Cosey calls her father a “dod”. This is presumably meant as a jab to his sense of leadership as is the arrow which points to the “mom”. This represents her preference in who is really the head of the household.
“A perfect world“
In this piece Cosey, her mother and younger sister are relaxing in a field of flowers. It is rumored that her father was once in the picture but his image was torn out, and the remaining pieces were taped together as if he was not included. The image of her father was found later that day secured above the toilet seat, representative of his proper “Throne”

Cosey just knows where her artistic talents come from, thus the preference to her mother in her work. Why she hung up on me this evening, I cannot interperet. Also with so many women in the household, she just doesn’t know what to make of having a man in the picture, LOL

Anyone can see the similarity to Post Modernism and Deconstuctivism. Cosey is simply expressing her artist statement of “mannequin with bird” or “I saw a pirate on the cereal box.”

“With a apparent dislike to her father, she conveys him as a blind, naked man with a bad haircut.”
That has to be the funniest thing I’ve read all day! Glad to see someone has updated his blog. I’m still behind but will try to set aside the time.

I think you should change your blog to “Confessions of a blind, naked man with a bad hair cut.”
And if I burst out laughing every time I see you for the rest of my life, just know that it is that sentence running through my head.
